Electrolytes: The Key to Hydration and Energy

Electrolytes

What are Electrolytes

Electrolytes are essential minerals for proper hydration in our bodies, benefitting our muscles and nervous system.

They come from our food and drinks, with the main minerals needed including sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium. Getting additional electrolytes can be beneficial after working out for over an hour, or if you feel muscle cramps, weakness, or fatigue.

The Benefits of Electrolytes

Electrolytes help your body absorb water, making them a great source to combat dehydration. Potassium and magnesium are used for energy, with calcium and sodium aiding in muscle function.

Other benefits include building your immune system, brain health and helping replenish lost fluids and minerals from sweating. Hydrating with electrolytes benefits your skin by boosting nutrient absorption, leaving your face feeling plump and glowy.

Electrolyte Powders

Advantages of dry powder electrolyte sachets include a customisable concentration for those looking for specific hydration needs. Packed with flavour and sold individually at stores such as Boots or Sainsbury’s, this is one way to get extra electrolytes in.

Some powder electrolytes are magnesium and potassium-filled, zero per cent sugar Heights Hydrate sachets. LMNT electrolytes contain a zero-sugar, vegan formula, along with a variety of strong flavours. Another popular electrolyte powder is Liquid IV drink mixes. While containing additional sugar, they have high-quality flavours and are available to purchase individually.

Electrolyte tablets

Electrolyte tablets are portable and small, fitting easily in a travel bag or carry-on. It is more convenient on the road, given that, unlike powder, there is no mess or mixing needed with a tablet.

Some portable hydration enhancements include Phizz’s 3-in-1 tablets, fusing your multivitamin, caffeine and electrolytes in one. Each tablet contains 18 micronutrients and is vegan-friendly. Another tablet option is the Nuun Sport electrolyte tablets, which fizz when added to water and contain five electrolyte minerals.

Electrolyte Drinks

Beyond electrolyte powder and tabs, drinks already containing electrolytes are another way to rehydrate. Although some drinks may have added sugars or sweeteners, sports drinks such as Lucozade or Powerade provide the energy needed after a long athletic event. Coconut water, cow’s milk, or electrolyte-infused water are other ways to increase your hydration without additional sugar.
